3 MAQUETTES

MARIANO VILALLONGA

Spanish artist Mariano Vilallonga enlisted Matt to translate a series of small-scale maquettes into large-format sculptural works for his exhibition “Itinerarios de la resistencia: 58 eran 83” showing at Centro de Arte Alcobendas July 2025.

Starting with three hand-sculpted figures in plasticine — later cast by the artist in resin — Matt prepared the surfaces of the figures and carried out high-resolution 3D scans using photogrammetry. The resulting digital models were cleaned and optimised, with subtle edits made to composition and proportion in consultation with the artist.

Each piece was scaled up to their respective final heights of 275 cm, 230 cm, and 220 cm. Structural analysis was conducted to evaluate wall thickness, weight, and centre of mass - ensuring the designs could be safely fabricated without compromising form.

The completed files were delivered for large-scale milling in porex. From there, Vilallonga applied his signature material treatments and surface textures to bring the final sculptures into physical form.
