DÍA MUÑOZ

Matt produced a sculpture for Ecuadorian artist Día Muñoz, CNC-milled from a digital model she designed.

Muñoz's earlier CNC work was relief carving, milled from one side only. This piece needed to be a true three-dimensional form, with undercuts and hollows the machine couldn't reach from just one side. It was made in two halves, and each half was milled on both sides, so the machine could carve into the form from every angle before the two halves were joined.

The difficult part was making sure the cutting tool could physically reach every part of the shape without colliding with the wood around it. Custom Grasshopper tools checked the model for undercuts, worked out where the tool head would collide with the geometry, and generated toolpaths for all four faces that would register precisely on assembly. The wood blocks themselves were built from glued plywood sheets, surfaced flat and even on the CNC before any milling began.

The result is Muñoz's first machined sculpture built as a full three-dimensional form, giving a new dimension to her work.
