TEMPERAMENTO

2025

JACINTO DE MANUEL & CARLOS SANJUAN

Matt was commissioned to fabricate a bespoke machine for Pulso de la Materia, an installation by Spanish artist Jacinto de Manuel, presented as part of ADN Fórum 2025 in Plaza Colón, Madrid.

At the centre of the installation is Temperamento, a ceramic engraving machine developed by Carlos Sanjuán. The device translates natural rhythms such as heartbeats or ocean waves into engraved lines on rotating ceramic surfaces.

Matt collaborated with Carlos, evolving an early-stage prototype into a refined, exhibition-ready machine. Matt then led the design, engineering and fabrication of the final hardware, which precisely synchronises motion, pressure, and input data to to translate passing rhythms into permanent marks on ceramic.

Built from CNC-machined parts and unfinished steel, the machine's appearance reinforces the installation’s theme. A balance of control, craft, and natural expression.
